Social Integration of Migrants: preparatory event in New York UNHQ

A half day seminar will be held in New York as a preparatory event for the Forum. It aims to prepare delegates of Permanent Missions to discuss one of the priority areas of the Alliance: migration and integration. Organized by UNITAR, the IOM, the UNFPA and the MacArthur Foundation, the event is also open to UN staff, interested representatives of civil society and the private sector.

It is increasingly recognized today that the integration of migrants requires a process of mutual adaptation between migrant communities and the societies in which they live and participate. All sectors of society face the task of building communities that acknowledge and enable migrants’ positive contributions.

The seminar will discuss the variety of responses to the challenge of social integration, and examine the need to tailor solutions to different migration contexts. Participants will have the opportunity to listen to a presentation of the joint AoC/IOM “Online Community on Migration and Integration”, just before its official launch at Global Forum in Rio.

The seminar on “Social Integration of Migrants” is organized by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the MacArthur Foundation.

It will take place on 18 May from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm in Conference Room E (NLB), in the UN Headquarters in New York.
